Wish Upon a Star 🌟

On the seventh day of July in Japan, we celebrate the celestial event of Tanabata, or The Star Festival. The origins of this event began in China in the 8th century, and it has evolved into a celebration of the romance of two stars, Vega and Altair. The lovers, who were separated by the Milky Way, were only allowed to meet once a year when the skies were clear. This meeting occurs each year on the 7th day of the 7th month, which is July in modern calendars, although some parts of Japan celebrate in August in accordance with ancient calendars.

On the day of celebration, people write small wishes on colorful pieces of paper and hang them in bamboo trees. The bamboo trees transform into wish trees, filled with colorful flutters of wishes. This tradition is such a huge part of our culture, we even have an emoji for these trees! 🎋 On the following day, the bamboo trees are decorated and floated on a river or ocean and burned as an offering. During the day, there are parades, yummy food, and decorations for all participants.

As twilight descends upon the celebration, the enchanting nature of Tanabata begins. Together we light lanterns 🏮 with intricate designs to help guide the lovers on their ethereal and celestial journey. The stars in the sky help add to the twinkling beauty and magical, dream-like night. ✨ Friends, families, and communities gather together under this magical sky, ushering in eternal love.

It is such a beautiful celebration of community, love 💕, hope, and unity. Everyone—young and old—gathers to make a wish. There is no hierarchy. There is no “winner.” Everyone is there in support of each other and their wishes and aspirations. It is a beautiful moment to witness.

Tanabata is also a reminder of how connected we are with the celestial 🪐 The heavens above are always rooting for us, even when we are not looking up to them and celebrating their greatness! It is my hope—my wish—that more communities find a beautiful tradition such as this to come together and embrace everyone for who they are and lift them up in beautiful celebration.

If you are looking for a reason to bring your own community together, why not try Tanabata next year? Vega and Altair would love to have your guidance and support.

See you and your wishes on July 7th, 2024 ✨✨✨
